Vagante: intervista allo sviluppatore

Vi siete ispirati a qualche altro titolo in particolare?

Ruger: How did you get the idea to create Vagante? You have been inspired by some other title in particular?
Eugene: Kyle, the other programmer on the project, and I are good friends, and we played a lot of the original Spelunky when it was released on PC. We easily played thousands of games, admiring what was probably the best game ever made in Game Maker. When the game was released on the XBox, we spent even more time on that. To this day, we play Spelunky off and on in our free time. Without a doubt, Derek Yu‘s game was the biggest inspiration for Vagante. The second inspiration for the game was the roguelike genre. I had been playing roguelikes in my free time, most notably Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup. I kept found myself playing Spelunky and DC:SS during my University lectures (I was never a good student, haha). Although the game started off as “Spelunky with more roguelike elements”, it’s grown to borrow ideas from many other great games; Castlevania, Dark Souls, and Diablo, just to name a few.

R: “Vagante” in italian has a specific meaning: it’s an adjective that identifies something “that moves from one place to another irregularly, without direction or predetermined destination”. The protagonist has a destination or a goal or will be completely “Vagante”?
E: Rather than the destination or the goal being “Vagante”, we came up with the name of the game to capture the feeling behind the protagonists themselves. The idea of vagabonds wandering this magical world for their own motivations has always appealed to us. This is part of the reason why we don’t have much story in place yet, we want to be careful in how we frame the adventure to keep the backgrounds of the protagonist open-ended. Maybe you’re exploring the world for treasure, maybe it’s for fame and glory, or maybe you just want to find power in magic artifacts and spells.

R: The classes and combat mechanics seem very interesting: can you tell us something more? There will also be special or unusual classes?
E: There’s only three real classes right now, which we designed to each have a slightly different play-style. Each class is further customizable through the distribution of affinity points when you level up. We only have three major classes right now, but we’d very much like to add more.

R: The audio is very important for a video game and in the launch trailer we have a taste of the sound of Vagante: what are the inspirations for this game?
E: Our composer and sound designer is the talented Sam English. I can’t speak for him as to his inspiration, but I know his process for making music is influenced the art in the game. So the art that our artist, Keo Bun, comes up with is first put into the game, and then Sam can look at the feeling of the area and come up with music. We’re very happy to be working with him.

R: Are you going to relase Vagante only to PCMac and Linux users or do you aim also at consoles like Wii UPlayStation 4XBox One and Ouya?
E: We’d like to release on as many consoles as we can. Our primary focus is a computer release, so that’s all we’ll be focusing on for now, but I think our game is well suited to consoles.

R: Would you like to say something to your followers or to the ones who doesn’t know your project?
E: We appreciate all the support from our fans so far! If you haven’t heard of our game and would like to know more, be sure to check out our Kickstarter page for more information.
